Have you had a website created for your company? Are you engaging with social media? Are you sending out a newsletter? Are you going to advertise with Google Ads? If so, you are going to use texts everywhere that you want to avoid online language errors.

The kind of texts you write can vary greatly from channel to channel. On your website this will be extensive information about your product or service, while on your social media will be short, powerful and enticing messages. What exactly should you pay attention to when writing this content? You need to pay attention to several things, but in this blog we will discuss one important one: online language mistakes!

Different channels, different content

Quite a few language errors are made on these various channels. Google doesn't get happy about this and so this can affect your ranking. But, this is still quite a tricky issue, as the rules on one channel are sometimes a bit different from those on another. For instance, emojis are not allowed in Google Ads, while they work fine in a social media post. With this blog, we will try to help you on your way!

Create a website without online language errors

Have you had a website created and are you getting started with textual content on various channels? If so, here we have listed some common mistakes you can counteract!

Online language mistake 1: Spaces and spelling

Good spelling says something about your professionalism and accuracy. If you have a website made with spelling mistakes, you come across as sloppy: your texts have apparently not been written by a professional and, moreover, the text has not been checked. This gives the impression that you are playing around and not taking your own website seriously.

Google is also getting smarter and can detect spelling errors. With space usage, this is complicated at the moment. Due to the English influences on the Dutch language, people often write words apart where they should not. This can look sloppy to your customers, especially if the words are related to your own expertise. Do you create websites as an internet marketing agency? Then don't describe yourself as an 'internet marketing agency'.

Google itself is slightly less sensitive to space. Google does not yet recognise all incorrect space usage and sometimes still gives an incorrect suggestion itself. For example, if you want to have a website made and therefore type 'internet marketing agency' into Google, Google will ask if you didn't mean 'internet marketing agency'. So there are still snags, but good spelling is still important anyway, so pay attention to your space usage!

Online language mistake 2: Punctuation

Make sure you have good punctuation, making your text easy to read. Too long sentences with hardly any punctuation do not please Google. Google wants the visitor to be able to read your text as clearly as possible and therefore prefers full stops and commas. So make sure your sentences are not too long and that you use proper punctuation when they are.

Speaking of punctuation: exclamation marks don't always please Google either. Especially in Google Ads, exclamation marks don't work well. In a title, they are not accepted anyway and in the ad text, it is better to be sparing with them.

Online language mistake 3: Emojis, yes or no?

Until a few years ago, emojis in texts were not at all acceptable to Google. But of course, Google is also moving with the times. Nowadays, you can even use emojis in a SEO text You can also place your content in the right places and use it to spice up your newsletter and social media posts.

With Google Ads, this is another story. When placing an emoji in your ad, you are currently still violating Google Ads' terms of use. So use emojis if it fits in your text and with your target audience, but never if it is an ad text.

Online language mistake 4: Trendy language use

Don't be tempted to put trendy language in your website or ad copy. Why?

  • It comes across as unprofessional;
  • Not everyone understands what it says. You may think you are appealing to a particular target group, but can also be quite wrong with this;
  • Google does not understand what it says and rejects your ad, for example.
