You may have been wondering of late: Is Facebook still relevant to my company in 2020? It’s not a daft question, as Facebook has come under quite a bit of fire over the past year: in the news, on the stock market, amongst (former) users and even in political issues. And you can read about the consequences everywhere: figures are falling dramatically and users are leaving in droves! But how bad is the situation really? And what does that mean for your company? We’ll try to shed some light on the matter and provide an answer in our blog!

Facebook: stay or go?
In the past 2 years, we've seen it all go by: scandalisation, subversion of rules and even political interference. And it's not over yet, as Facebook is still under fire. This time in relation to Facebook's course when it comes to political ads. The current policy allows politicians to lie in political ads on Facebook, without any penalty or punishment. Mark Zuckerberg says he will not go back on this.
What do the numbers say?
None of this is bad, but there is also a positive point in Facebook’s favour: we cannot say that the company has exactly crumbled under the weight of the scandals and criticism. They are still making billions in profit every quarter, and the latest results exceeded the low expectations. Facebook’s business model is solid, with revenue continuing to rise.
Our tip: Calm down!
Want to leave Facebook behind and rush headlong after TikTok and other trends? You can. But we’d say: take it easy. So whilst there’s a lot of criticism of Facebook, the figures don’t really reflect that. If Facebook has worked well for your company so far, there’s actually no reason to move away from it now.
It’s good to be aware of new trends, but whether you go along with them is another matter. Digital innovations are advancing at breakneck speed, whilst you (the person behind your company) remain, after all, human. And people don’t move as fast as those digital innovations. That’s why it’s best not to chase every trend, but to work out what you can achieve with the channels you’re already using and, if necessary, assess whether a new channel can genuinely offer significant added value. So invest in the tools you already have by analysing, at the end of the year (or the start of the new year), what you’ve already achieved with them and whether there might be more to gain from them.
Throwing Facebook overboard? Don't. First look at what it has brought you in the past year and how you can use it as new in the coming year. Pace yourself and observe for a while.

How do you keep your Facebook relevant and likeable in 2020?
The Facebook News Feed favours content from family and friends above all else, and is less keen on content from brands and companies. Why? Facebook aims to encourage more social interactions whilst ensuring that people spend more time (with each other) on Facebook.
How do you see this reflected?
- The Facebook algorithm favours interaction, such as liked posts, comments and conversations. So these come higher in the newsfeed.
- Posts from friends and family are also more appreciated and ranked higher.
- For business pages, their reach may decrease if they don't take this new algorithm into account.
What does this mean for your company?
Do you post content that doesn’t get any engagement? Then you’ll see a drop in reach. Even if your page doesn’t spark a conversation amongst friends, you’ll start to notice the effect of the algorithm. On the other hand, Facebook will actually reward you for high-quality content that does generate engagement.
So if you want to continue using Facebook successfully, you need to focus on good, valuable content. We give you 3 tips that are in line with the rules of the Facebook Newsfeed:
- Ensure interaction
Focus on content that you believe will generate engagement. Engagement can take various forms, such as likes, comments or shares. When posting, you should therefore think carefully about the image and text: what will encourage interaction from your target audience? For example, choose a question or image that sparks a reaction or makes a specific statement.
- Live videosor vlogs
Post videos that spark a reaction and start a conversation. This could be a live video, for example, featuring a training session, webinar or Q&A. You could also create a video in the form of a vlog: give a glimpse behind the scenes or discuss a topical and high-profile subject! Our tip: stay relevant and always keep your target audience in mind.
- Make it personal with groups
Facebook groups can be the ideal place to promote your blog, reach your target audience and thus generate more visitors. Join Facebook groups as an individual that overlap with your field of expertise. Here, you’re likely to come across people whom you can help, but who are also interested in your posts, for example.
If you blog, you naturally want your posts to be read, but that doesn’t happen by itself. No matter how interesting your piece is, you need to promote it. Facebook groups offer an ideal platform for sharing blog posts from your website. Would you like to have a new website built in London and include blogs on it? We’d be happy to help you plan it!
What is the benefit of such a Facebook group:
- By joining groups, you can tap into a new network.
- You can network with people in your field and support one another by sharing each other’s content.
- You have a new opportunity to connect with your audience.
- You can promote your content.
There are thousands of groups to choose from. See where your audience is and join these groups.
Facebook is far from dead
And are things really that bad for Facebook? If the headlines are to be believed, yes, but if we look at the figures, it's not all that bad. So there's no need to run after every new trend: see what you can still get out of your Facebook!
In any case, make sure you are even more personal and even more audience-focused. Always use social media with your target group in mind and post quality messages that make you stand out and create interaction.
